Happy New Year, everyone! New's Year's Eve has always been a big night for rock concerts. I guess it's just very appealing to ring in the new year watching, listening, and singing along with your favorite music artists. There have been many legendary New Year's Eve shows and bootleg recordings available over the years, most notably featuring artists like Bruce Springsteen and The Grateful Dead, but also acts such as the Allman Brothers, Santana, U2, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc. I have previously featured 2 great NYE shows on this blog (The Kinks-1980 and The Band-1971). In looking back through my collection of NYE shows, for this NYE post I decided to go with a show that was a little different and not as readily available, and that also features another of my favorite artists that I have not yet posted anything by. So, here is a unique NYE show from Elvis Costello, from 1981, the time between his Almost Blue all-covers 'Country' album and his pop masterpiece Imperial Bedroom. This show features an extensive and eclectic setlist, including most of the songs (seldom-performed) from the underrated Almost Blue album, and several 'previews' of new songs ('Pidgin English', 'Kid About It', 'Shabby Doll', 'Human Hands', 'The Long Honeymoon', 'Beyond Belief') from the yet-to-be-released Imperial Bedroom, as well as the usual faves from that period. The set even includes Steve Nieve's intermission solo performance (which includes Auld Lang Syne). The set also includes old friend John McFee (from Clover and Elvis's first album) sitting in on pedal steel guitar for a few songs. A very unique and wonderful show. Sound quality is good, but not great (a bit tinny sounding, with not much low end), but the show is well worth the listen. In fact, this show, which is from the Palladium in NY, follows exactly one year later (at the same concert hall) as the Kinks 1980 NYE Palladium show, already posted here. How's that for continuity?

I usually don't post Springsteen shows, not because I have anything against the Boss (actually I am a big Fan), but because there are so many other places and sites devoted to Springsteen (and that do a much better job than I could), there just isn't any reason. However, for these Christmas collections, which I haven't seen posted at very many other sites, it just seemed to be the right thing to do. I really wanted to post something Christmas related, and these are just seemed the most appropriate Holiday themed boots around. So, here are a couple of 1-disc Christmas compilations that are just the thing for the holiday season. As most everyone knows, over the years, Springsteen has been known to put on some big Holiday Extravaganza shows (mostly from his hometown of Asbury Park), complete with guest stars and special holiday songs. These are two different collections of some of the highlights from these shows. Although they both contain many of the same Christmas songs, they are all from different shows, thus every song is at least somewhat different from every other. The first collection (Santa Boss) compiles all of the different Christmas-themed songs from over the years, while the second (Merry Christmas from Asbury Park) tries to capture the feel of the Holiday shows, just in a much-shortened format, thus including Springsteen classics along with the Holiday fare. Both are very good. Hope you enjoy them and have a very Merry Christmas and Holiday Season.

Now this is an example of how great it is to have the availability of the internet and all these great music blogs. I never would have heard about or been interested in a band like Blitzen Trapper if it weren't for the music blogs (particularly those that have song samples. I think I heard these guys first through Aquarium Drunkard). I have long ago stopped trying to keep up with the hippest 'indie' or 'experimental' bands. It's just not worth it for me (probably because most are worthless). But every now and then you come across a really special and exciting 'new' group that blows you away. These guys have been called 'indie' and 'experimental', but really they are good old-fashioned 'edgy folk-rock', and have a retro sound that is really satisfying. They fit right in with other 'roots rock' type groups, but are a rarity and a revelation among most 'modern' indie bands. Check 'em out.

Here's another great Midwestern 'Roots Rock' band that never quite got the recognition and appreciation they deserved. Lead by Sam lllanas and Kurt Neumann, The BoDeans have endured through thick and thin as a hard-working rock band, and they are still performing today. Unfortunately, for a band that has toured extensively over the years, there are very few shows available. This is the best one I've come across, a high quality radio broadcast from 1988 that highlights songs from their first two albums. However, this comes a full year before what I consider by far their best album and touring period (Home, 1989, tours 1989-1993), thus, as good as this is, it doesn't include any of my most favorite BoDeans songs. If anyone has or knows of the existence of good quality shows from the 1989 or 1991 tours, I would love to get them. But, for now, this serves as a fine introduction to the BoDeans.

Before signing to Geffen records, the band recorded demo versions of a number of songs, which became known as the 'Flying Demos'. This is the band's original demo tape that was sold at early shows, and later re-surfaced among the Counting Crows fanbase. These are excellent recordings, actually sounding much better than most 'demo' tapes. Some songs from the tape later resurfaced (in reworked versions) on the band's debut album August and Everything After. However, many songs remained unreleased (although different versions of some have subsequently appeared as bonus tracks, etc. on future releases). Included here are some standout songs that surprisingly did not become a part of their recorded output. A must for any fan of the band. Four bonus live tracks from 1994-08-19 (Montreal) have been added to the original 13 song tape in this version that has circulated among fans.

Here is an excellent show from the 2004 Hard Candy Tour with an awesome setlist featuring a great mix of songs from all their albums, including the world premiere of a brand new song ('A Tuesday in Amsterdam Long Ago') that would not appear on album for another 4 years. Great sound quality from an FM broadcast makes this one especially notable.

Here is a very good show from Counting Crows on the This Desert Life Tour, featuring most of the songs from that album. Although many people believe the 'Crows' first album is still their best, I would have to say that 'Life' is my favorite. It showed their  growth and development into a great band; it was more diverse, uptempo, upbeat, lighter in tone than previous ones, and contained some of their best songs (including their very best song, 'Mrs. Potter's Lullaby'), yet still retained that distinctive Crows style. And the 'Crows' have always been much better live than as captured on records, which is evident in this show, a good quality radio broadcast.

OK, here it is, at along last, my Lifehouse compilation. This compilation gathers together unofficial recordings (live concerts, studio outtakes, and unreleased demos) of songs performed by The Who that were originally written for, intended for, or otherwise associated with Pete Townshend and The Who’s aborted 1971 project, Lifehouse. All tracks have been previously available from various bootleg sources. This compilation represents, as far as I know, the first comprehensive collection of the Who's Lifehouse songs. I put this together because, in the 38 years since the initial demise of Lifehouse and the release of Who’s Next in it’s wake, there has not been any attempt to collect all of the remarkable music written for that project as performed by the Who in a single collection. So, here it is, my version of Lifehouse, which I have dubbed ‘This Old Lifehouse – The Bootleg Reconstruction Project’. I believe Lifehouse, and this assemblage of songs represents the greatest rock album never released. I have spent well over a year tracking down, listening, compiling, and sorting through countless available bootleg recordings to find the best assemblage of tracks for this compilation. I also wanted to try, as much as possible, to use recordings from the original group (Townshend, Entwhistle, Daltrey, and Moon) near the time of Lifehouse itself, so an emphasis is on recordings from 1970-1976. Originally, I wanted to include as much as possible from the original 1971 Lifehouse shows, unfortunately, most of the available recordings from these shows are not very good, and in most cases I had to use other better recordings. Most of the tracks used come from soundboard recordings, thus the overall sound quality is very good. The one glaring exception to this is the recording of ‘Time is Passing’ which comes from a relatively (compared to the rest of the tracks) poor audience recording. However, this is probably the only live recording of this track (other than the officially released Young Vic show from 4/26/71) in existence, as this song was dropped from the setlist after only a few performances. Thus, it is included here, but is not up to the quality of the rest of the collection. This set is as complete as I could make it, but unfortunately, there are still a few tracks for which I could not find any unofficial recordings (‘Teenage Wasteland’ was apparently never recorded by The Who, and ‘Going Mobile’ and ‘Put The Money Down’, have apparently, and quite surprisingly, never been played live, and thus no unofficial recordings exist). I give a big Thank You to all those that have made these recordings available. I have prepared two versions of this collection, a lossless version (in FLAC), and an mp3 version (@320 kbps). The tracks contained in each version are identical, with the exception that the FLAC set does not include ‘Mary', as I could not find a lossless source for that track. The compilation consists of songs compiled from 15 different live concerts and 4 studio sessions ranging from 1970 to 2006. 17 of the 27 tracks come from the core group years (1970-1976) and 22 of the 27 from the 1970’s. The ‘Official’ D.I.Y. Compilation

Since I first became aware of it in the 1970's, I have been fascinated with the music of Lifehouse, Pete Townshend and the Who's abandoned 1971 musical project. Although most of the songs have been released sporadically in various bits and pieces over the years, I have been waiting ever since that time for a comprehensive collection of The Who's Lifehouse songs to finally be released. Except for Townshend's Lifehouse Demos (which are simply fantastic, but still demos, and not the Who's versions of the songs) which was released in 2000 as part of the Townshend's 6-CD Lifehouse Chronicles, I am still waiting. A few years ago, when I discovered the vast warehouse of unreleased and bootleg material available, I immediately searched for anything related to Lifehouse, but was again disappointed to find that no one had actually attempted to reconstruct a Lifehouse bootleg. So, it came down to me doing it myself.
        As anyone knowledgeable of Rock ‘n Roll history knows, in 1970, as a follow-up to their enormously successful rock opera Tommy, Pete Townshend proposed an even more ambitious project, Lifehouse, a multimedia event that would encompass live concerts, a motion picture, and a double album. The concept combined teachings from Townshend’s spiritual mentor, Meher Baba, with a science fiction-based storyline. Lifehouse was meant to explore the idea that music is the fundamental basis of all life - that every human being on Earth has a unique musical melody that "describes" them, and only them, perfectly. When the unique songs of enough people are played in unison, the result would be a single harmonic note - the One Note. As a very brief synopsis, the story was to take place in 21st century Britain, in an age where pollution has become such a drastic problem that people spend most of their lives in impervious "experience suits" which are connected to a universal grid and supplied with entertainment and artificial life experiences by the government. Along comes Bobby, an electronics wizard who rediscovers 20th Century rock and roll music, takes over a disused rock theater, renames it “The Lifehouse”, and breaks into the computer network controlling the suits to invite people to leave their suits and come together for a concert. Despite the best efforts of the government, thousands of people gather at the Lifehouse, as the musicians (The Who) and audience perform classic rock n roll, as well as experimental songs interacting with the audience designed to eventually achieve the ‘One Note’. However, the details of the story are immaterial at this point, what matters most is the great music that Townshend had written and planned for the project. Townshend wrote close to 30 songs either specifically for or to be used in some way (such as for the rock concert portions) in the project. This was undeniably Townshend’s most productive period, and much of the best music he ever wrote went into Lifehouse. Lifehouse is probably the greatest rock album never released, and could have been The Who's best album. But, as problems in the development of Lifehouse mounted, and the grand scale of the project was falling apart, it was decided to abandon the concept and just put out a single album containing some the best stuff, and to make it just a solid hard-rock album. The resulting ‘compromise’ album, of course, was Who’s Next, generally considered the Who’s Greatest album, and one of the greatest rock albums of all time. But it still is not what it could have been, with dozens of great songs left behind.

Because so many of the songs intended for Lifehouse have been officially released in some form or another, as I began looking into making this compilation, it became clear that there should be 2 distinct collections: one that compiled all the officially released studio versions of the Lifehouse material, and one that contained unofficial recordings, mainly live versions, of the Lifehouse songs, that could be shared, distributed, and downloaded among fans. The ‘official’ collection, is presented only as a tracklist and information on where to find (what official albums contain) the appropriate tracks. I have put both collections under the umbrella title of ‘This Old Lifehouse’, with the ‘official’ collection dubbed ‘The D.I.Y. Compilation’ (Do-It-Yourself), as it requires Who fans to compile the collection themselves using their own purchased album collections. The other set, designated ‘The Bootleg Reconstruction Project’ is the compilation of various unofficial live recordings, studio sessions, and demos, that have not been officially released, and that will be dealt with in a subsequent post. Note: Track order was arrived at by combining information from existing available sources (such as Townshend’s Lifehouse Demos, Lifehouse Chronicles, the 2000 Sadler’s Wells Lifehouse Concerts, and other live shows) and arranged into a reasonably accurate and aesthetically pleasing sequence.

Ok, here's one more Little Feat show before we move on, this one from the post-George reunited band in 1988 (just to show that they were still great in the post-George era). Craig Fuller (formerly of Pure Prairie League) had opened (as the Kaz/Fuller Band) for and played with the Feat on their last tour (1978), so the band was already comfortable with him when they asked him to join the band, primarily for lead vocals. Multi-instrumentalist Fred Tackett (who also had previously played with the band on most of their studio albums) was also officially added for additional guitar and miscellaneous instrument work. The rest of the band was the same core as when George was there (Payne, Barrere, Gradney, Hayward, and Clayton), which is more than enough to make a great rockin' band. The re-formed and re-energized band came out smokin' with one of the group's all-time best albums, Let It Roll, in 1988, and their subsequent tour was as great as ever (As great as George was, Payne's keyboard work has always been my favorite part of the band). The new songs blended in great with the old classics, and the band has been rockin' on ever since. Fuller only stayed until 1993, however, and after that female vocalist Shaun Murphy was added to the group, which resulted in a somewhat different vocal sound for some of the classics, but it still worked well, and the Feat continue to put on a great concert show to this day. As mentioned previously hundreds of Little Feat shows (from all eras) are available through the Live Music Archives (www.archive.org/details/etree). However, this excellent 1988 soundboard show is not available there, but you can get it right here.

Here are a couple more Little Feat shows, these from near the end of Lowell George's tenure with the band. I wanted to feature a concert from this period, as they include several newer songs ('Time Loves A Hero', 'Day or Night', 'All That You Dream', etc.) from the mid-70's albums not yet available in the earlier 1974 shows already posted. The UNH show has better sound quality, but is drastically shortened (cut to 55 minutes for radio broadcast), and the William & Mary show, while it has some sound problems and a noticeable cut in 'Dixie Chicken' (but still pretty good sound overall), it has the full show (and a similar setlist as the UNH show), so the songs missing from the UNH show can be heard here. Thus, I decided to post them both.

Little Feat has always been one of those bands that you have to hear live to really appreciate. Their studio records have never adequately captured their great sound as well as their live performances. Which is probably why their one official live album from this period (Waiting For Columbus- WFC) was their most popular album. And incidently, WFC, recorded in in 1977, has been widely acclaimed as one of the greatest live albums of all time (check it out). Anyway, these represent some of the last group of shows with Lowell George. After the 1978 tour wrapped up, early in 1979 and the making of their next album (Down on the Farm), Lowell announced he was leaving the group and would start a tour in support of his new solo album (Thanks, I'll Eat it Here). The rest of the group finished the album and released it in June 1979, but also announced that the group was disbanding. Two weeks later, George tragically died of a heart attack while on his solo tour. That was seemingly the end of the band. However, 9 years later (1988), all the surviving members reunited with Craig Fuller (from Pure Prairie League) added on vocals and Fred Tackett on miscellaneous guitars and strings, released a new album and went on a triumphant tour. Driven by Bill Payne, Paul Barrere, and Richie Hayward, and featuring an even more diverse sound, the reformed band was still great (even without Lowell, although he certainly was missed). And the new incarnations of Little Feat have been performing steadily ever since (although some additional lineup changes have occurred, the core of Payne, Barrere, Hayward, Clayton, and Tackett has remained), and they still put on great live shows. So, if you get thet chance they are still well worth seeing (They are currently on their 40th Anniversary Tour, as the band was first started in 1969). Unfortunately, in August 2009 it was announced that drummer Richie Hayward was leaving the group due to health problems (later determined to be liver cancer), and Hayward subsequently died in 2010. [Update: guitarist Paul Barrere died on October 26, 2019, also illness due to liver cancer.] As a loving remembrance to those  who have passed on, but also those still rockin', here are these classic shows from 1978.

Here are a couple classic performances by the legendary Little Feat, one of the greatest (and perhaps most underappreciated) Rock n' Roll Bands of all time.Their unique blend of driving Rock 'n Roll with Folk, Blues, New Orleans Funk, and Jazz-Rock Fusion elements, with Lowell George's inimitable songs, vocals, and slide guitar work, Bill Payne's driving keyboard funk, Paul Barrere's guitar, and one of the best rhythm sections ever (Kenny Gradney-bass, Richie Hayward-drums, and Sam Clayton-percussion), remains unsurpassed. This is my own compilation of the Ultrasonic Radio Sessions. These are tracks from two separate performances at the Ultrasonic (WLIR) Studios in Hempstead, NY combined into one full CD-length show. I have taken the superb Pre-FM Master recordings from The 1974-09-19 Session, added the additional 3 songs from the FM rebroadcast that were played that day but not included on the original radio broadcast, and then added just the tracks from the 1973-04-10 Ultrasonic show that were different from those played at the 1974 show (taken from an FM broadcast). Thus, this compilation includes (for the first time) the best available version of all of the songs played over the course of the two sessions, arranged into a seamless concert program. Although I have not edited the original Pre-FM recordings (because they are nearly perfect), I have edited out some of the between song talk and intros from the 1973 tracks, so that the whole show will fit on one CD (FLAC version only), and this one is definitely worth burning onto CD. There are few high quality recordings from these early days and prime period of this great band (and these are probably the best). So, enjoy this great compilation of these amazing Feats, which I have dubbed 'Ultrasonic Ultra'.

Here's some more vintage Procol Harum, this one a live recording from the original Procol Harum lineup, in 1969 (and probably the best sounding live Procol boot available from this era). This boot contains 2 New York shows, but is known as 'Easter Island' (I have no idea why). Procol Harum was one of the great pioneers of progressive rock, and their odd combination of classical themes and styles (provided by Brooker's melancholy vocals and Fisher's church-like organ) with the searing R&B-style guitar jams of Robin Trower remains unique. So, check out this unique piece of rock history.

As a side note, Procol Harum was actually the very first rock concert I ever went to as a young teenager, at a place called 'The Kinetic Playground' (a cramped, dumpy, converted warehouse) in Chicago, IL, back in the early '70's (Gentle Giant was the opening act). Brings back long distant memories.

Here's one more early '70's Kinks show, as the Kinks return to the Fillmore West just about a year after their highly successful stint there in 1969 (great concert boot from that show posted previously). This one is a bit of an oddity, however. Ray and the band are very loose and deliver a rambling eclectic set that seems more like a rehearsal session than an actual performance. It does have it's moments, though, such as a 10-1/2 minute extended jam version of 'Last of the Steam-Powered Trains' and a rockin 'Brainwashed'. Overall, not really one of their best shows, but, as always, still interesting and great to hear them at this stage in their career. I picked this up from 'Viva Les Bootlegs' awhile back, so thanks to them.

Here's another fine Kinks show from the early 70's, following the 'Everybody's in Showbiz' album. This one features the expanded 8-piece band configuration (they added keyboards, trumpet, trombone, and sax/clarinet from about 1972-1976) , and it is interesting to hear the added horns and arrangements on some of the earlier songs. The recording quality is not great, but still very listenable, and better than many from this period.

Hey, it's been well over a year since I posted any Kinks shows, so it's high time for some Kinks! I've got a few more vintage shows from the early '70's that don't seem to be as widely circulated as some others. Here is a very good audience recording from a show from Queen's College in 1971, capturing The Kinks in their hey-day, and Ray Davies in a particularly playful mood throughout. This show is also notable because a student, Ben Rosenblatt, who introduced himself to Ray before the show, was invited to accompany the band on piano on two tracks - Mister Pleasant and Autumn Almanac - both rarely performed live. This was previously posted on Wolfsbane's music site 'Nathan's Rock Moat', but the links there have expired, so here it is at 'The Chronicles'.

Here's another radio show from fairly early in BNL's career, this one as they return home after the widespread success of their first album (at least in Canada, it would be a couple more years before they attained success in the U.S.). Here they perform almost the entire first album, as well as several new songs that would later appear on their second and third albums. Already by this time, the band had a much more professional approach than the earlier wilder shows (pre-first album). They are still having fun, but now put more emphasis on the music than the craziness. An excellent show. Enjoy.

Sorry about the long time since the last post, but I've been on extended travel and vacation, and did not have access to the internet for most of that time. Anyway, after posting such fun groups as the Fab Poodles and Deaf School, I thought I would continue with who I think is the most fun rock band of all time, the Barenaked Ladies. Their music is fun, clever, and witty, their shows are fun, and they always seem to be having great fun performing their music. However, these guys are not only about fun, they are also great musicians, with great songs that are highly diverse and reflect many different styles and influences. They have grown and developed (and possibly matured?) as musicians, songwriters, and performers over the years, and have put out surprisingly strong, articulate, and nuanced performances and songs on their later releases (Such as the Are Me and Are Men albums). Thus, they have become another one of my favorite bands. In their early days, they were known as sarcastic, irreverent, smart-alecks, and were all about just having fun. Here is a concert from those wilder early days of the group, from May 1991, several months before their first major album, Gordon was released in 1992 (They had only a couple of self-produced indie tapes at this point). It is a wild, raucous, talkative, and almost out-of-control show (as they can barely contain themselves), with the 'ladies' featuring a number of tongue-in-cheek covers (everything from Prince and Madonna to rap and NWA), several other early original but never-released songs, as well as numerous songs that would appear on their first album. This well-recorded radio broadcast gives a good glimpse of the somewhat chaotic early shows by the band. I believe I originally got this from Nathan's Rock Moat, so thanks Wolfsbane.

While I'm covering great, quirky, unique, but sadly short-lived '70's bands (such as the Fabulous Poodles), Here is an early radio show from Deaf School, a band that was great fun while they lasted. Started from a group of art-theater students in Liverpool, Deaf School combined a dizzying array of eclectic influences, from 1930's melodrama, musical theater, 50's schmaltz, 60's pop and jazz, and 70's rock, to create a truly unique style and sound. Their first album, Second Honeymoon, is just delightful, and works both as a great pop album, and as sonic theater. This show was recorded some time in early 1976, prior to the release of their first album (apparently was recorded while they were in the process of recording the album, probably around April-May, 1976). Although a short set for the radio show, it nonetheless showcases several of the songs that would be on their upcoming album. Also included is a bonus track of a demo of an unreleased song featuring an even earlier incarnation of the band. I got this from the website of Ian Ritchie, who was the Sax player for the band. I hope more people can find out about and enjoy the music of this excellent, but unsuccessful band. Of note is that apparently, the band is much more popular now than they ever were. In recent years they reformed (with almost all of the original members), and have had several successful tours and reunion shows.

Here's an all-too short, but very sweet BBC radio show from the Fabulous Poodles, a great, but very short-lived late '70's band. These guys had a great sound that was a combination of early Kinks and The Who, mixed with 50's kitsch and 70's new wave, and clever, witty lyrics. That's right, not only did they sound great, but they were funny, too. Just a great, original, and overlooked band. This way-too-short show highlights some of their best songs, but leaves out so many more. Still, great to have any live recordings of the band (still looking to find their other, longer radio broadcasted shows from 1979). So, check out the poodles, you'll be glad you did.

For my last entry in this mini-tribute to under-appreciated piano-based rock, I give you... Neil Young? Ok, So, Neil is not exactly known as a piano guy, and is much more known for his searing guitar leads than his keyboard work. But, Neil has been known to do some very interesting piano interpretations of his songs from time to time. Anyway, this is a fan compilation that has been around for quite awhile (covering from 1970-1992) and I thought this would be a good opportunity to post it. I have posted several other Neil compilations and this fits right in (Followers of this blog probably figured that I would find a way to bring this back around to Neil sooner or later, right?). So, this is a very good compilation with some unusual arrangements of some familiar songs as well as some obscure songs. So, Remember this was compiled a while ago from older tapes, so the sound quality varies, and also, because of its age, unfortunately does not include some later very good piano renditions (most notably from the 1999 solo acoustic tour). I got this from BigO Worldwide awhile back, but was originally compiled by long-time rusty, Shawn McCorkle, so thanks to them for making this available.

While we're still highlighting piano-based rock, I wanted to post another Joe Jackson show, this one from the Big World Tour, which was a great album and tour. Jackson has made several great albums, but I consider Big World to be his real masterpiece, his most ambitious and accomplished album, and a rewarding listening experience. Just a great (and great sounding) album from start to finish. Unfortunately, it has not gotten the attention it deserves. I consider Big World to be one of the very best albums of the '80's. This quality recording from Tokyo captures the spirit and excellence of the show quite well, and is highly recommended, particularly for those that may not be as familiar with the Big World songs as with Joe's other 'hits'. This is the complete show.

As promised, here's another great Supertramp show from their prime, in 1975 just as 'Crisis? What Crisis?' was coming out. Great assortment of songs from 'Crime' and 'Crisis'. As with the 1977 radio show, this show has been passed around in many forms, titles, and versions, along with much misinformation over the years, so the exact date and recording information is not certain. However, this show seems to be the basis of almost all Supertramp boots from this period (1975-76). I have several different versions, claiming to be from Wembley, Hammersmith Odeon, and even a compilation of the 1976 US Tour, but they are all this same radio show, more or less. Seemingly, the most reliable information indicates that it was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon, 1975-03-09, but I'm not sure. This is the by far the best recorded version I have found, as it is 'Complete and Remastered' according to the notes (Although these notes also claim that it is from Wembley). Great show and great sound. With This show and the previously posted 1977 show, it makes a great 2-CD Live compilation that covers the best of from this period.

Continuing with great piano-based rock, Here is Supertramp, another one of my favorites, from their peak period (1974-1977). Because of their subsequent pop success (from Breakfast in America -1978 on) and coinciding musical irrelevancy, it's easy to forget that Supertramp was one of the great progressive bands of the '70's. Their 3 albums from these peak years (Crime of the Century-1975, Crisis? What Crisis?-1976, and Fool's Overture-1977) are just great, and among the very best from any artist. Although the Supertramp sound is most closely associated with vocalist Roger Hodgson, I have always preferred his counterpart, Rick Davies, in all aspects, the songwriting, vocals, and his distinctive piano (keyboard) playing. Davies songs and style, and the wonderful Sax (and clarinet) additions of John Anthony Helliwell, are what made these really special to me. So, here is a Great BBC Radio broadcast from Supertramp in 1977. There seem to be many bootleg versions of this show floating around, all apparently having slightly different songs included, and most having only a part of the complete show. This version combines all known BBC recordings (pre-FM), thus being the most complete version available (However, some other boots also mixed in songs from other dates). Although this is a great show, it does not have nearly enough songs from 'Crime' and 'Crisis', so I'll have some more Supertramp coming soon to better cover that period.

OK, So Randy is not exactly a 'rocker', but he certainly is a quality piano guy, and one of the great American singer-songwriters and composers of our time. So, here's a well-recorded, great full-length show from 1983 of just Randy, his piano, his wit, and his songs. Here we get his full mordant, sardonic, sarcastic, or however you want to describe his controversial lyrics and style, and the set includes virtually all of his classics, as well as many lesser-known (but excellent, like one of my faves, 'Baltimore') songs in this show, which was shortly before he began devoting most of his time to film scores and theatrical productions. So, here's to another underappreciated piano-based songsmith, Randy Newman. (Also, it's coincidental and interesting that this show is practically from the very same day in 1983 that the Joe Jackson show posted earlier was from. Different parts of the world, but both rockin' in their own unique way).

Next up in this mini-tribute to underappreciated piano rockers is another consummate musician and master craftsmen of the piano and keyboards, who can seemingly master all styles (pop, rock, country, bluegrass, jazz, classical,etc.), and that is Mr. Bruce Hornsby. Whether he's jamming with The Grateful Dead, Don Henley, or The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, or leading his own band and performing his own deep song catalogue, he maintains a commanding presence at the keyboards, yet has a very low-key and humble attitude. Achieved tremendous initial success with his first song and album 'The Way It Is' in 1986, but in the subsequent years as he explored more varied and diversified music (and a lot of jazz-influenced records) his widespread popularity has steadily decreased. However, he has continued to make great, strong, albums and world-class music straight through, and is always a joy to listen to.

Here we have a real treat, an excellent unreleased live album from Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers from 2007. This was professionally recorded and produced (recorded, mixed, and mastered by Bruce's sound engineer - Wayne Pooley - using a soundboard matrix enhanced by select multi-tracks), and was offered for free download at Bruce's web site as a Holiday gift to fans around Christmas 2007. This recording was only offered as a free download, and has never been available for purchase through Bruce's livemusic web site, or any other commercial outlet. Thus, this album was never officially released or commercially available. Although no longer available through the website, I was one of those fortunate enough to be able to download it in 2007, so here it is for all to enjoy. Thanks Bruce!
